PRACTITIONERS by Matt Hayward and Patrick Lacey
Where to begin with this one? This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2018. Matt Hayward and Patrick Lacey have bright futures ahead of them in the horror genre. They work great together if this book is any indication. I think this collaboration has made both authors stronger in terms of style and prose. Both authors have a few books under their belts and it shows.
PRACTITIONERS is a book that spans genres. It's definitely horror, but it's also a gritty neo-noir. It could also be considered a mystery/thriller. The tension is nice and tight. The characters are great. There are no throwaways. The protagonist is shrouded in mystery. The supporting cast is pivotal.
Henry is a police officer with the Bellview Police Department. His wife was killed and he wants answers. Someone knows something, he just needs to find them. Henry's world is decaying around him. His partner, George, senses the downward spiral. Henry found himself at the bottom of a bottle. He's seeing things. Hearing things. Will he find out who killed his wife?
Worlds collide in this Lovecraftian tale of pure terror. Matt Hayward and Patrick Lacey have created their own mythos with this one. I'm talking Brian Keene type mythos. This story kind of reminded me of Matt Hayward's short stories starring Frank Carpenter. I want to visit this world again.
PRACTITIONERS is every bit unnerving as it is frightening. Matt and Patrick serve up a slice of macabre life. This story will make your skin crawl and question your own sanity. The unease sets in from the start. The mood is dark and you can feel the dread creeping in. I think I'll have a beer now.
It's a quick read and a great escape. Read it with the light. If you want to live dangerously, then I suggest a booklight.
